Hey everyone!
I’m starting a new series called Weekly Wine Review where I share some of the bottles I’ve been drinking recently!
I’m kicking off the series with a bottle from one of my favorite wineries, Monte de Oro!
The Wine
This week’s wine is a 2014 Zinfandel from my wine club shipment (not sponsored) at Monte de Oro.
Located in Temecula Valley, California, this dry desert region produces big, full wines which is perfect for Zinfandels.
On the nose, this wine bursts with aromas of dark berries and peppercorn.
On the palate the wine is full bodied, with medium-plus tannin, with notes of blackberry jam, blueberry, cinnamon and allspice.
History
Did you know that Zinfandel is one of the most popular grape varietals in California? Originally brought over from Vienna in the 1800s, it has been a staple ever since.
Although the white zinfandel is quite popular for it’s sweet, easily drinkable flavor, the red version is very, very different.
Zinfandels can vary in fullness depending on their alcohol content. A wine that is higher will tend to have bolder, spicier notes than one with less.
Pairing
As many of you know from my previous post, I love to use food delivery services such as Marley spoon. One of this week’s recipes was cheese ravioli in a tomato & brown butter sauce. This was one of my favorites so far as it was super easy and delicious.
The sauce only called for tomatoes, garlic and salt and pepper, but I decided to add a splash of the Zin to give it a little bit bolder of a flavor.
Usually I would pair a wine that is a little less bold, but I thought this super peppery wine would be a nice touch.
Some other great examples of food to pair with a Zinfandel would be: Pork, BBQ ribs and roasted veggies.
Where To Buy
